CULLYTech Timer v1.2

, December 2, 2009

It seems as if my Pomodoro Timer is a small hit. Some friends were asking for enhancements and I’ve been making the changes as fast as I can. One enhancement was to make the timer work better when shrunk very small. Something along the lines of the Windows Gadgets. While I was at it, I [...]

The Pomodoro Technique

, December 1, 2009

A developer friend of mine, Toni Feltman, was Tweeting about reading the Pomodoro Technique. This technique is meant to increase productivity by focusing on a task uninterpted for 25 minute blocks, followed by a short break, and then repeating. Every four 25 minute blocks, you can take a longer break. Read more about the Pomodoro [...]

Haiku Alpha has the potential to be great!

, September 15, 2009

I’ve been following along with the Computer Action Show and they just did a review of Haiku.  In the end, I really wanted to take it for a spin. Haiku is an operating system that is a complete rewrite of the BeOS using the MIT license.  Do we really need another operating system?  Yes.  Choice [...]

MEPIS Linux Thunderbird EMail Blocked By Guarddog Firewall

, May 1, 2009

I had this problem solved several years ago … but of course I had forgotten it. I hope this helps someone else out. I have Comcast Internet which has blocked port 25 in sending email, and now allows port 50. That port can change any day now, and without warning, no thanks to spammers. I [...]

Updating home machines to MEPIS 8.0

, March 29, 2009

I’m on machine #2 of my house-wide upgrade to MEPIS 8.0 which is my Son’s desktop. He’s got some network card that reports itself as a “davicom semiconductor” card and the upgrade didn’t like it. No network access. I poked around and found the following commands that when executed as “su” solved my problem. Note [...]

sudo Open This Lego Box

, December 27, 2008

My 9 year old son walked into my office yesterday. He was carrying his prized Lego Star Wars AT-TE Walker box and he asked me if I could open the box for him. “Are you sure you want me to open that?” I say in a playful voice. “Yes, just open the box Dad!” says [...]

Batch processing JPG images! Everyone MOGRIFY!

, July 14, 2008

I’ve been doing more web site designs lately. My clients will often give me hundreds of product images that I need to manipulate. I’ve got Thumbnailer on the Windows platform to do a lot of my processing. However, I’ve taken to adding borders to the images. Typically I’m adding a white inner border, with a [...]

Linux Widescreen LCD Love At Last

, June 16, 2008

My office is an oven in the summer. I’ve got two servers, a desktop, a laptop, and two 19″ CRT monitors. By the afternoon, temperatures are over 84 degrees in my office. I’ve contemplated doing all sorts of expensive solutions. Window AC unit was one, but it would be ugly, loud and my neighbors wouldn’t [...]

Akregator : Love it.

, June 11, 2008

I’ve been running Akregator for several months now. It’s working great. For my only complaint, I’ve just fixed a few minutes ago. I don’t know why I lived with this annoyance for so long. When I want to read a blog entry in an external browser such as Firefox, it wouldn’t open the browser if [...]
